Kaunis Kranjska Gora (Beautiful Kranjska Gora)

Olipa ihana loma Slovenian Kranjska Gorassa! Tuli patikoitua ja rentouduttua, arkiset asiat unohtuivat reissussa. Voin lämpimästi suositella paikkaa lomakohteeksi kaikille ulkona liikkumisesta kiinnostuneille.

I had a wonderful vacation in Kranjska Gora Slovenia! I hiked and relaxed, and forgot the everyday matters during the trip. I can warmly recommend the village for anyone who is interested in outdoor activities. It is very clean there, the people are friendly and speak at least English and German well, nature is beautiful and air is clean and fresh.

Kuvassa onkin alempi Spodnji Martuljkov:n putous.

The first excursion was a not so hard. It was a good thing that we did not climb so high on the first day. We walked from Kranjska Gora (810 meters above sea level) to Zgornji Martuljkov water fall (about 1100 m asl). During our walk it rained quite heavily, but it did not matter much. I could not take a picture of that beautiful water fall, because my camera would have got wet in the rain. This picture is of the lower Spodnji Martuljkov water fall.

A dog started to walk with us in the morning and followed us the whole excursion. I was sure he would turn back on the village border, but he wanted to come along.

On Wednesday we went for a more challenging hike. We wanted to take a bus to Vršič (1611 m), but there was not enough room for all of us. So our local guide organized two cars to take the rest of us up. From Vršič we hiked to the top of Slemenova špica (1911 m). While walking down to Tamar valley, we saw a lot of snow and ice, which had not yet melted. We walked back to Kranjska Gora trough Planica valley. On the way we looked at the Planica ski jump with respect (it is the biggest in the world), and wondered, how anyone can jump of it. The ski jump itself looked very different than in the winter on TV, somehow it looked like it had seen its best days, but after all it is not made to be used in the summer. At the village of Podkoren we saw the giant slalom slope, where the World Cup competition of Kranjska Gora takes place. So I have some more knowledge of sports, too.

On Wednesday we had an excursion to Bled, Ljubljana and Postojna caves. Bled is a town about 30 minutes from Kranjska Gora and in the lake Bled there is the only island in Slovenia. We stopped for an hour, on which time I walked around the eastern end of the lake and looked at the views. There was a track for rowers on the lake and some of them were training. I heard that the Slovenian rowers are one of the best in the world.

Ljubljana was just as kind and clean as Kranjska Gora. It is actually the smallest capital in Europe and the atmosphere is very nice. At first I went to see a part of the city called Krakovo, which is south from the center. People grow vegetables there to be sold on the market place, and because of that and the small houses, it felt like I was in a village. From the castle of Ljubljana it was a great view above the city.

Komea luola olikin. Menimme ensin pienellä junalla syvemmälle luolaan, josta jatkoimme kävellen parin kilometrin kierroksen. Luolia on yhteensä 24 kilometriä kolmessa eri kerroksessa, joista keskimmäisessä me olimme. Samalle opastetulle kierrokselle sattui englantilainen poikakuoro, joka lauloi meille luolaston viimeisessä osassa ”konserttisalissa” kolme kappaletta. Olmia (ihmiskala, Proteus anguinus) emme kuitenkaan nähneet.

After lunch and a bit of shopping we continued to south to Postojna dripstone cave. What a great cave it was. We took a small train deeper in the cave and then walked about a two kilometers tour. There is 24 kilometers of the caves all together in three levels, of which we were on the middle. We had an English boy choir on the same guided tour with us, and on the last part of the cave ”The Concert Hall” they sang three songs for us. However, we did not see Proteus anguinus, the human fish, which I would have wanted to see.

Because the hike to Triglav was postponed one day, I rented a mountain bike on Friday. First I rode to the Peč (1508 m) on the border of Slovenia, Italy and Austria. To save my strength for the next day I took a less steep way up. On the top there was a great view especially to Austria. The way to the village of Rateče was all downhill. It was surprisingly hard for palms and I had to stop a couple of times to let them rest. Before heading back to Kranjska Gora I continued to beautiful Lago di Fusine lake in Italy to have lunch.

Lauantaiaamuna lähdettiin oppaan ja kuuden matkalaisen voimin Slovenian korkeimmalle vuorelle Triglav:lle. Ajoimme ensin autolla Mojstranan kylän kautta Krman laakson perimmäiselle parkkipaikalle 946 metrin korkeuteen. Sieltä alkoi viikon kovin patikkamatka, nousu 2515 metrin korkeuteen Triglavski Dom –majatalolle.

On Saturday morning we, a guide and six travelers, started our journey to the Slovenia’s highest mountain Triglav. First we drove by Mojstrana village to furthest parking lot in Krma valley in 946 meters. From there we started to hike to Triglavski Dom, a hut in 2515 meters. On the way we saw a marmot and a lot of beautiful flowers. For example Cyclamen purpurascens, which does not grow in Finland.

After having some lunch our guide Tadej went up to the top (2864 m) with me and another person of the group. We got a rope and helmets for out safety. The rope had to be tight at all times and the guide was always above us to take care of the safety. Those last over 300 meters were not so hard, because we went on with a slow speed.

The view on the top was rugged and barren. On the south side the clouds cleared of and we could see far. On the north side we could see nothing, there were only clouds. At some point, when we walked on the ridge, it felt funny when we could only see while in addition to the ridge. It was impossible to know how high up we were or what kind of a drop would be right next to us.

The way down from the top went also well with our experienced guide. Part of the mountain was so steep, that we had to go backwards, because it would have been otherwise impossible. I have to admit that without the guide and safety equipment I would not have climbed to top, that much I was worried about getting down. Back at the hut I felt like a winner. After we got back, a couple went up. The two last had to wait until the morning.

Our room was clean but very small, only about 8 square meters. There were two two-layer beds, which were 120 cm wide - sleeping facilities for 8 people. None of us slept well.

The wake-up was before six o’clock. Outside there was a terribly hard wind, a bit less than 200 meters per second, which means that it blew almost at the speed of a hurricane. After waiting for a couple of hours the wind did not show enough signs of calming, so we had to start heading down. The two last members of our group did not get to the top of Triglav.

The way back to the Krma valley went fast when comparing to the climb of the previous day. After we got back to Kranjska Gora a heavy rain started. Luckily we did not get wet. A nap at the hotel was well deserved.

Maanantaina ehdin vielä käydä pienellä kävelyllä, siis edellisiin päiviin verrattuna pienellä. Pyysin aamupalalla hotelilla lupaa käyttää saunan suihkua ja lainata pyyhettä palattuani, koska jouduin jo luovuttamaan huoneeni aamulla, ja se onnistuikin mukavasti. Niinpä kävelin vielä Vršič:n suuntaan katsomaan venäläistä kappelia (1158 m) ja palasin toista reittiä joen vartta pitkin takaisin.

On Monday I had enough time for a short walk – compared to the previous days, that is. After the breakfast the hotel personnel agreed that I could use the shower at the sauna and borrow a towel, when I returned (I had to check out in the morning). So I walked to the direction of Vršič to see the Russian Chapel (1158 m) and came back on another way, by a river.

Istuessani bussissa matkalla lentokentälle yritin lukea mukana ollutta kirjaa.

When I sat in the bus on the way to the airport I tried to read a book. It was impossible to concentrate, when I could not keep my eyes of the mountains. I wish I could have taken them with me!

Koska ehtisi neuloa? (When would there be time to knit?)

Greetings from the promised city of chocolate addicts! I was on a business trip in Brugge Belgium for four days and in the city there were chocolate shops almost next to each other. And they were not just shops, the pralines and many other chocolate sweets were made in them.

But I will first tell about my slowly progressing knits. The only one that is in a better shape than on the last time is the top. The back is knit and the front is on the half way. I would anyway say that I have good reasons for being slow, for example planting flowers and the trip. The program in Brugge was so tight that there was no time for knitting and I was too tired on the flights to do that, too. However, I would like to finish the top this weekend.

And here are some pictures. The tourists were taken around the city with this kind of carts. We considered a ride too, but we did not have time for it.

Bryggeen liittyvät ehkä läheisimmin suklaa ja kanaalit. Paikalliset kutsuvat kaupunkiaan pohjoisen Venetsiaksi – en osaa ottaa asiaan kantaa, koska en ole käynyt Venetsiassa, mutta joka tapauksessa kanaaleilla on selkeä vaikutus kaupunkiin. Kaupunki on ehkä kaunein, jossa olen koskaan käynyt. Bryggen vanha keskusta on UNESCON maailmaperintölistalla.

The two main things of Brugge are probably chocolate and canals. The locals call their city the Venice of the North – I can not comment on that, because I have never been to Venice. One way or the other, the canals have a clear effect on the city. It is probably the most beautiful city where I have been. The center of old Brugge is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Tällainen suloinen suklaapuoti löytyi Eiermarkt:lta Markt–aukion länsipuolelta.

This quite chocolate shop is on Eiermarkt, west from Markt square.

Tämän koristeellisen talon ohi kuljimme Oostmeers ja Prof. Dr. J. Sebrechtsstraat –katujen risteyksessä, kun etsimme tiistai-iltana mukavaa ravintolaa.

We passed this decorated house on the crossing of Oostmeers and Prof. Dr. J. Sebrechtsstraat, when we were looking for a nice restaurant on Tuesday evening.

Nuo komeat kultakoristeiset rakennukset olivat lähellä hotelliamme Brug–aukiolla.

On the first morning, Tuesday, I woke up one hour too early. The reason was classic – I forgot to update my mobile phone to the local time. I got ready and went for breakfast, but strangely it was not ready yet. However, when I noticed my mistake, I was actually quite happy for it, because I had time to go out. So I went to change to my running clothes and shoes and went to look at the city. It was so nice to jog on the early and peaceful hours and get to know the city that way, so I did the same next morning, too. These beautiful gold decorated buildings were close to our hotel by the Brug square.

Keskiviikkoaamuna juoksin tämän kauniin paikan ohi Snaggaerdstraat:lla.

On Wednesday morning I passed this beautiful place on Snaggaerdstraat.

Tällä aluksella matkustimme keskiviikkona Dammeen illalliselle.

We took this boat on Wednesday evening to get to dinner in the town of Damme.

Näkymä Dammesta Bryggeen päin.

A view from Damme to the direction of Brugge.

Like it happens on the most of the journeys, a lot of Brugge stayed unseen. I did see a lot from the outside, but I would have liked to see the indoors, too. I hope I will someday have a change to spend some time of my own in the city.

Suloinen lankapuoti (Lovely yarn shop)

Today I went to see a yarns shop in Hakaniemi Helsinki called Vihreä vyyhti. I had previously found a couple of products on their web site, which I had to get for both my secret pal and me. I’ll tell more about the products after the secret pal season. The service was very kind and the lady even promised to mail me a product that was not available today.

During the same visit to Helsinki I stopped at a large book store too to find a travel guide for my trip to Kranjska Gora in the summer. Well, I bought more than I had planned. In addition to that Slovenia guide I bought a hiking guide for Julian Alps and a combined map of Slovenia and Ljubljana. The excursion destinations have been located, but more studying must still be done. It was nice to hear that the saleswoman had been in the same place. She had liked the country, destination and local people very much.

Otherwise the last days have been quite boring, since I got the cold on Tuesday. It’s mostly runny nose, but also makes me tired. I have knitted hardly at all. The cross country skiing part of Kalevan kierros is tomorrow, but I will not take part in that. I keep my fingers crossed for the GSK team!

Terveisiä Lontoosta! (Greetings from London!)

It is interesting, how 2,5 mm bamboo knitting needles can turn to be a lethal weapon after a night in London. I checked a day before my flight to London at the internet page of Finnish Civil Aviation Authority that it is allowed to take knitting needles made of wood and plastic in to the cabin. And I could almost finish the wrist part of gloves during my taxi ride and flight away from Helsinki.

The taxi driver told me that I was the first one to knit in his car. He even complemented me for being very creative for spending time during the ride having a plan how to spend time when waiting for the gate opening and during the flight. This made me to smile, because it is all about some kind of addiction to the combination needles and soft yarn.

During the time at Helsinki airport and flight to London the only people who were interested about the needles were some members of our group and one flight attendant. I’m not quite sure if she was more interested in what I was making or afraid that the plane would be grabbed - I guess first option is more likely.

On Wednesday at Heathrow airport I had to give up my dangerous weapon and send it to cargo hold. The lady at the check-in desk was very kind and even went to ask from the security guard about the needles. There should have been a lot of tine to knit, because we arrived to the airport 3 hours 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time. In addition the flight was two hours late.

I ended up having lots to do even without my hand work. Just when I had passed the security control, I was needed for helping a guest of ours whose flight had been cancelled. Let me assure you that everyone should be very certain about their willingness to access the tax-free shops before passing the security control. First I ran to the gate 40, from which according to a security guard I was supposed to get back to the country. I could not believe myself when I noticed that he had said 14, not 40 - I even confirmed with him that he said 40 and still got it wrong. Those two gates are really far away from each other. Well, I passed the passport control, the luggage arrival hall, customs and off I went to find the customer. When we finally got him a ticket, it was an hour later that when I first had passed the security control. There were positive thing about this event, too. I did not end up to be one of the randomly picked persons for the customs control, one hour of the waiting time went very fast and the steps of the day increased by more than 2000 :D

After those events I was ready for shopping. After that my colleague and I worked to find a solution for her cancelled flight. Unfortunately she had to postpone her departure for vacation to the next morning. Another hour must have passed with her.

Then I had time to get a bottle of water and drink it, which stopped beginning headache. When I finally got to sit with our group, I was (believe it or not) too tired to knit.

We landed to Helsinki about 12.55 am. Those who should have had other planes to catch, got rooms in a brand new Hilton hotel and flights for Thursday morning, or alternatively got taxies to take them to cities which are about 200 km away. That must have been hard. I was home at 2.05 am and got to bed half an hour later.

Most sorry of all I was for a mother who was travelling with her about 1,5 years old baby. They too had to spend the night in the hotel and could continue their journey next morning. The mother had paid extra so that she would not have to take care of their two luggage in addition to the stroller and a large bag she had had with her in the cabin while stopping at Helsinki. One luggage had even got broken during the flight. The service of the flight company was very poor on that point, and the personnel told the mother to handle her baggage by herself. Fortunately some wonderful people of our group helped the tired mother to reclaim about the luggage and transfer the baggage to the hotel.

I have heard about people who see berries when they go to sleep after picking them for a long time. I saw passenger with trollies – happy passengers, fortunately.
