Varmoja kevään merkkejä (It's spring time)
Eilen uutisissa kerrottiin, että Ruotsissa on lämpötilojen perusteella virallisesti kevät. Yhtä varma kevään merkkejä on havaittu tänään Espoossa, kun kävely- ja pyöräteitä on alettu lakaista hiekoitushiekasta. Oli ihanaa pyöräillä osa kotimatkasta puhtaalla kadulla.
Yesterday the news told that based on temperatures there is officially spring in Sweden. Another sign of spring was seen in Espoo Finland today, when the city has started the clean the sand of the foot and cycle roads. It was so nice to cycle part of the way home on the sandless street.

Ajattelin tehdä langoista yhdessä luonnonvalkoisen kanssa pipon ja lapaset. Katselin Folk Mittens -kirjasta bosnialaisia lapasia, joiden kuviota voisi soveltaa pipon reunukseen. En ole aiemmin juurikaan kirjoneuleita tehnyt enkä malleja soveltanut, joten nyt pääsen lunastamaan lupaukseni olla Peloton Neuloja.

I think yarn will find an off-white friend and turn into a hat and mittens. There is a pretty pattern for Bosnian Mittens in the Folk Mittens book. The pattern could probably be used for a hat, too. I have not knit too many multicolor clothes or taken a pattern and used it for some other knit than it was designed for before. This is my change to proof to be a Fearless Knitter.

Postipaketti (Postal package)
Tänään minua odotti kotona yllätys töistä tullessani. Postista oli tullut päivän aikana ilmoitus, että siellä minua odottaa paketti. En enää ehtinyt postiin, mutta maanantaina pääsen sitä hakemaan, joten jännitys säilyy viikonlopun yli.

Terveisiä Lontoosta! (Greetings from London!)
Mielenkiintoista, miten bambuiset 2,5 mm puikot muuttuvat tappavaksi aseeksi vietettyään yön Lontoossa. Tarkistin ennen toissapäiväistä lentoa Lontooseen ilmailulaitoksen sivuilta, että puiset ja muoviset puikot ovat sallittuja lennoilla. Sainkin sormikkaiden ranneosat melkein valmiiksi taksimatkan ja menolennon aikana.
Olin muuten ensimmäinen, joka tämän taksikuskin takapenkillä heilutteli neulepuikkoja. Sain kuljettajalta oikein kehut kekseliäisyydestä kuluttaa aikaa matkan aikana ja varautumisesta lennon odottamiseen. Hymyilytti, kun kyseessä on kuitenkin jonkinasteinen riippuvuussuhde puikkojen ja pehmeän langan yhdistelmään.
Mennessä puikot aiheuttivat mielenkiintoa vain samassa ryhmässä matkustavien keskuudessa ja yhdessä lentoemännässä. En tosin tiedä oliko hän kiinnostunut tuotoksesta vai jännittikö hän mahdollista koneen kaappausta - veikkaan kuitenkin ensimmäistä.
Eilen takaisin tullessa jouduin luopumaan vaarallisesta aseestani ja laittamaan sen ruumaan. Lähtöselvitysvirkailija oli oikein ystävällinen ja kävi turvatarkastajilta kysymässä, saako puiset puikot ottaa koneeseen myös Lontoosta lähtiessä, kun kerroin sen Helsingissä onnistuneen. Aikaa puikkojen heiluttamiseen olisi periaatteessa pitänyt olla yllin kyllin, koska olimme kentällä noin kolme ja puoli tuntia ennen arvioitua lähtöaikaa ja lisäksi lento lähti vaivaiset kaksi tuntia myöhässä.
Eipä silti, puuhaa riitti ilman käsityötäkin. Juuri kun pääsin turvatarkastuksesta läpi, työkaverini soitti ja pyysi auttamaan vierastamme, jonka lento oli peruttu. Voin vakuuttaa, että Heathrowlla kannattaa olla varma halustaan päästä verovapaalle puolelle ennen kuin käy turvatarkastuksessa. Ensin juoksin portille 40, jolta piti turvamiehen mukaan päästä takaisin Englannin puolelle. En voinut uskoa itseäni, kun huomasin varmistuskysymykseni jälkeenkin menneeni siihen vanhaan, että englannin numerot 40 ja 14 menevät sekaisin. Terminaali 1:ssä nuo portit ovat kaukana toisistaan. No, ei muuta kuin passintarkastuksen, matkalaukkujen vastaanottohallin ja tullin läpi takaisin etsimään asiakasta. Kun saimme hänelle lipun, oli kulunut tunti siitä, kun olin ensimmäisen kerran läpäissyt turvatarkastuksen. Positiivisia puoliakin asiasta löytyi, sillä en joutunut tullissa pistokokeeseen, odotusaikaa kului mukavasti ja päivän aikana kävellyt askeleet lisääntyivät yli kahdella tuhannella ;D
Seuraavaksi pääsin shoppailemaan taxfree -kauppaan, jonka jälkeen työkaverin kanssa pohdimme ja selvittelimme hänen peruttua lentoaan. Hän joutui suureksi pettymykseksi lykkäämään lomalle lähtöä seuraavaan aamuun. Siihen taisi mennä toinen tunti.
Sitten sain viimein hankituksi vesipullon ja hörpittyä siitä suuren osan valtavaan janoon, joka jo yritti yltyä päänsäryksi. Kun vielä pääsin istumaan porukkamme luokse, en enää olisikaan (kerrankin!) jaksanut neuloa.
Lopulta laskeuduimme Helsinkiin vähän ennen yhtä yöllä. Jatkolennoille aikoneet pääsivät joko uuteen hienoon Hiltoniin yöksi ja aamulennoilla kotikaupunkeihinsa tai taksilla lähempiin kaupunkeihin. Osa lähti vielä ajamaan Mikkeliin ja Lappeenrantaan, minkä on täytynyt olla todella rankkaa. Itse oli kotona kahden aikaan ja vaaka-asennossa puolta tuntia myöhemmin.
Kaikkein eniten kuitenkin harmitti noin 1,5 -vuotiaan lapsen kanssa matkustavan äidin puolesta. Hekin joutuivat yöksi hotelliin ja pääsivät jatkamaan matkaa vasta tänä aamuna. Äiti oli maksanut matkasta ylimääräistä, jottei hänen tarvitsisi käsitellä matkan aikana rattaiden ja ison kassin lisäksi vielä kahta matkalaukkua, joista toinen oli lennon aikana rikkoutunutkin. Tuossa kohden lentoyhtiön palvelu petti pahan kerran, ja hän käskettiin itse huolehtia tavaransa kentältä hotelliin. Onneksi meidän porukasta löytyi ihania ihmisiä, jotka auttoivat väsynyttä äitiä tekemään laukustaan reklamaation ja kuljettamaan tavarat hotelliin.
Olen kuullut ihmisistä, joilla marjastuksen jälkeen vilisee marjoja silmissä - minulla vilisi silmät ummistettuani trollien kanssa kulkevia matkustajia, jotka onneksi olivat hyväntuulisia.
It is interesting, how 2,5 mm bamboo knitting needles can turn to be a lethal weapon after a night in London. I checked a day before my flight to London at the internet page of Finnish Civil Aviation Authority that it is allowed to take knitting needles made of wood and plastic in to the cabin. And I could almost finish the wrist part of gloves during my taxi ride and flight away from Helsinki.
The taxi driver told me that I was the first one to knit in his car. He even complemented me for being very creative for spending time during the ride having a plan how to spend time when waiting for the gate opening and during the flight. This made me to smile, because it is all about some kind of addiction to the combination needles and soft yarn.
During the time at Helsinki airport and flight to London the only people who were interested about the needles were some members of our group and one flight attendant. I’m not quite sure if she was more interested in what I was making or afraid that the plane would be grabbed - I guess first option is more likely.
On Wednesday at Heathrow airport I had to give up my dangerous weapon and send it to cargo hold. The lady at the check-in desk was very kind and even went to ask from the security guard about the needles. There should have been a lot of tine to knit, because we arrived to the airport 3 hours 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time. In addition the flight was two hours late.
I ended up having lots to do even without my hand work. Just when I had passed the security control, I was needed for helping a guest of ours whose flight had been cancelled. Let me assure you that everyone should be very certain about their willingness to access the tax-free shops before passing the security control. First I ran to the gate 40, from which according to a security guard I was supposed to get back to the country. I could not believe myself when I noticed that he had said 14, not 40 - I even confirmed with him that he said 40 and still got it wrong. Those two gates are really far away from each other. Well, I passed the passport control, the luggage arrival hall, customs and off I went to find the customer. When we finally got him a ticket, it was an hour later that when I first had passed the security control. There were positive thing about this event, too. I did not end up to be one of the randomly picked persons for the customs control, one hour of the waiting time went very fast and the steps of the day increased by more than 2000 :D
After those events I was ready for shopping. After that my colleague and I worked to find a solution for her cancelled flight. Unfortunately she had to postpone her departure for vacation to the next morning. Another hour must have passed with her.
Then I had time to get a bottle of water and drink it, which stopped beginning headache. When I finally got to sit with our group, I was (believe it or not) too tired to knit.
We landed to Helsinki about 12.55 am. Those who should have had other planes to catch, got rooms in a brand new Hilton hotel and flights for Thursday morning, or alternatively got taxies to take them to cities which are about 200 km away. That must have been hard. I was home at 2.05 am and got to bed half an hour later.
Most sorry of all I was for a mother who was travelling with her about 1,5 years old baby. They too had to spend the night in the hotel and could continue their journey next morning. The mother had paid extra so that she would not have to take care of their two luggage in addition to the stroller and a large bag she had had with her in the cabin while stopping at Helsinki. One luggage had even got broken during the flight. The service of the flight company was very poor on that point, and the personnel told the mother to handle her baggage by herself. Fortunately some wonderful people of our group helped the tired mother to reclaim about the luggage and transfer the baggage to the hotel.
I have heard about people who see berries when they go to sleep after picking them for a long time. I saw passenger with trollies – happy passengers, fortunately.

Valmis! (Done!)
Union Square Market -pusero valmistui maanantaina, työmatkaa edeltävänä iltana, eli juuri ja juuri aikataulussa. Mietin, onko se hieman nafti, mutta työkaverin mielestä onneksi ei. Yläselässä käsiala on jostain syystä ollut heiman tiukempaa kuin muualla. Käytin puseroa jo tiistaina ja se on ihanan lämmin ja pehmoinen eikä kutita, niin kuin lampaan villa tekisi. Väreihin ja nappeihin olen tosi tyytyväinen.
My Union Square Market pullover was finnished on Monday, the evening before my business trip and just within the schedule. I was not quite sure, if it is a little bit small for me, but luckilly my colleague said that it fits just fine. I have made the upper back slighlty tighter than the other parts. I wore the pullover on Tuesday and it is comfortably warm and soft and not at all itchy like lamb wool would be. The colours and buttons are very beautiful.

Hyvä Riina ja Anu! (Well done, Riina and Anu!)
Siskoni Anu pääsi tänään shelttinsä Riinan (kuvassa) kanssa agilitiyn kolmosluokkaan upealla nolla-tuloksella! He voittivat luokkansa 3,91 sekuntia toiseksi tullutta paria nopeammalla ajalla. Onneksi olkoon!
Myös äiti teki hienon radan ykkösluokassa Sopu-sheltin kanssa, alle ihanneajan eikä yhtään ratavirhettä. He saivat ensimmäisen kolmesta kakkosluokkaan vaadittavasta tuloksesta. Onnea myös teille!

Also my mother did very well with her Shetland sheepdog Sopu. They got no fault points from either the course or the time. This is their first of three results needed to get to the 2nd class. Well done, you too!

Napit (Buttons)
Menin tänään katsomaan nappeja Union Square Market -puseroa varten ja kauniit löysinkin Soukan lankakaupasta. Vaikka napit kuvassa näyttävätkin muovisilta, oikeasi ne ovat metallia. Ensimmäinen hiha on valmis ja toinenkin jo melkein kainalossa asti, joten loppusuora häämötää. Valmiiksi pusero on saatava viikonloppuna.
Samalla lankakauppakäynnillä ostin myös ensimmäiset bambuiset Addini. Sukkapuikot ovat kokoa 2 ja 2 ½, ja tulen testaamaan niitä ensiviikon lentomatkoilla sormikkaisiin.

Luistelun tuloksia (Results of skating)
Melkein unohdin kertoa, miten Kalevan Kierroksen luistelu meni. Reittiä oli lyhennetty lähempänä rantoja jäälle nousseen veden vuoksi ja siirretty keskemmälle järveä. Meillä puolimatkalaisilla oli luisteltavana 3 x 6 km lenkki, eli yhteensä 18 km. Tulokseni on ehdottomasti hitaimpien joukossa, sillä minulla aikaa kului reilut 1 h 1 min. Olen silti tyytyväinen suoritukseen, sillä olen luistellut viimeksi vuosi sitten, enkä edes kaatunut kertaakaan.Ja kyllä, Rantasalmella oli niin vahvaa jäätä, että se kesti sekä meidät luistelijat että muutaman autonkin.
I almost forgot to tell about the skating of Kalevan Kierros. The route had been shortened and moved to be more on the center of the lake, because there was some wather on the ice by shore. We, who participate the half distances, skated 3 x 6 km round, 18 km all together. My time was one of the slowest, because I spent a little more than 1 h and 1 min on the route. I am still happy with the result, becouse it has been a year since I last skated, and I did not even fall once.
And yes, there was strong nature ice at Rantasalmi. It hold very well all the skaters and some cars, too.
Olen nyt myös ETY (I'm VSF)
Katsokaas, mitä Ihana Siskoni oli tuonut työpäivän aikana ulko-oveeni roikkumaan! Kortissa luki, että kyseessä on ystävänpäivätervehdys kahdelle ETY:lle eli erittäin tärkeille ystäville, siis Geenalle ja minulle. Samoin siinä luki, että olen nyt sekä ETY että KETY, joka puolestaan tarkoittaa kenneltyttöä ja on agility-maailmassa hyvin arvostettu termi. Kiitos ja halaus!

Vanhoja neuleita (Previous knits)
Lisäisin sunnuntaina kuvia vanhoista käsitöistäni, mutten ehtinyt kertoa niistä mitään. Yllä on lähikuva isälle muistaakseni vuoden 2005 joululahjaksi tekämästäni villapaidasta. Yritin ottaa hyvän kuvan koko puserosta, mutta tulos oli sen verran kehno, että päädyin tähän ratkaisuun. Ohje löytyi Novitan nettisivuilta ja lankana on seiskaveikka.
On Sunday I inserted pictures of my old hadicrafts, but had no time to tell anything about them. Above is a detail of a sweater that I made for my father for Christmas 2005. I tryed to take a good picture of the whole sweater but ended up with a number of not so good ones. That is why you'll only see this picture. The model is from Novitas internet pages and the yarn is Novita 7-veljestä.
Äiti sai vajaa vuosi sitten synttärilahjaksi haarukkapitsihuivin. Oli hauska kokeilla jotain uudenlaista tapaa tehdä käsitöitä. Malli löytyi Novitan lehdestä ja lankana on vyyhtilanka Soukan TeeTee -myymälästä. Tein itselleni toisen samanlaisen.
My mother got this lace shawl for her birthday almost a year ago. It was nice to try a new way to make handycrafts. The model was in Novita magazine and the yarn in nameless yarn from TeeTee yarns shop in Soukka, Espoo. I made an other one just like this for myself.
Isä sai vuoden 2007 agilityn MM -kisoinhin päälleen puseron Novitan Samos Lollipopista, jonka malli taisi olla edellisen kevään lehdessä.
I made this sweater for my dad for agility world championships 2007. The yarn is Novita Samos Lollipop and, if I remember right, the model was in Novita spirng 2007 magazine.

Luistelemaan (Skating)
Ylihuomenna onkin jo Kalevan kierroksen luistelu Rantasalmella. Hankin maanantaina retkiluistimet ja monot - vähän viimetippaan, mutta eipä ole ollut harjoituskelejä, joten ei kai se niin hirveästi haittaa. Monotkin ovat oikein nätit kiehkurakuvioineen, vähän kuin olisi kiharaisia oksia. Kyllä, turhamaisuus siis iski, kun oli kauniit monot valikoimassa.
Rantasalmelle on luvassa lauantaiksi asteen tai parin verran lämmintä ja ehkä hieman sadetta. Asiantuntijat keskustelupalstalla arvioivat, että kelistä tulee liukas.
Kalevan kierros begins day after tomorrow in Rantasalmi with skating. I bought the freeheel iceskates and suitable shoes on monday - quite a short time before the event, but it does not matter, since it has not been possible to practise here, because the sea has not freezed this winter. My new shoes are very pretty, they have curley branch like figures on them. Yes, vanity got a hold of me, when I saw the beautiful shoes.
The weather forecast for saturday is about +1...2 degrees of Celsius and some light rain. The experts are predicting that the ice will be very slipery.

Uusiksi menee (Re-knitting)
Sain työmatkalla valmiiksi puseron etu- ja takakappaleet - tai siis melkein, koska neuleessa on jotain pielessä. Erivärisen reunan pitäisi kääntyä kauniisti kaksinkertaiseksi nurjalle puolelle reilun sentin matkalta, mutta minun työni käyttäytyy ihan toisin. Reuna taittuu itsestään niin tukevasti oikealle puolelle, ettei sitä ole toivoakaan saada edes höyryttämällä kuriin.
Mietin asiaan ratkaisua, ja yksi idea tulikin. Viimeisen päävärillä neulotun kerroksen voisikin neuloa hieman paksummilla puikoilla. Taitos kiinnitetään nurjalla juuri noihin nurjan puolen silmukoiden "nyppyihin". Ajattelin, että ylimääräinen löysyys katoaisi kiinnitykseen, ja silloin väärään suuntaan taittuminen ehkä estyisi. Täytyypi kokeilla.
I nearly finnished the front and back of my pullover on during my business trip, but there is something wrong with it. The contrast colour edge should make a nice turn to the wrong side - mine does not do that. The edge turns to the right side by it self and there is no way to put it under control.
One solution came in to my mind. I could knit the last main colour row with a bit larger needles. The contrast coloured edge is joined to that row on the wrong side. I think that the extra loosnes could dissapear when the stiches are joined together and maybe then the edge would not turn to the right side. I must try it.
