Toinen toppi (Another top)

Enpä tullut huomioineeksi, että silkki ja puuvilla painavat eri verran. Puuvilla on siis silkkiä kevyempää, ja silkille sopivilla puikoilla puuvillasta tulee ”peltiä”. Joopa joo, toppimalli siis vaihtuu.

Viimeisessä Modassa (2/2008) oli kiva malli numerolla 41. Odotan kuitenkin vielä uutta lehteä, jos siinä olisi joku hyvä vaihtoehto. Tuon lehden piti ilmestyä tänään, mutta ei sitä meidän Prismassa eikä Citymarketissa näkynyt. Jospa se olisi siellä huomenna.

Tuota mallia 41 yrittäisin muokata hieman. Etuosan kaula-aukko saisi tulla mielestäni hieman alemmaksi, toppi olla muutaman sentin pidempi ja vyötäröllä voisi olla vähän muotoa. Noista toimista pidennys on helpoin ja ainoa, jonka olen aikaisemmin tehnyt, mutta toisiakin kannattanee yrittää.

I did not take in consideration, that silk and cotton do not weight as much. So cotton is lighter than silk, which means that when it is knitted with needles that suite for silk, it gets really tight. Oh yes, I need to find a new top pattern.

In last Moda magazine (2/2008) there was a nice pattern number 41. I will still wait for the new issue, if there would be a good option. It was supposed to be published today, but I didn’t see it in the nearest hypermarkets. Well, maybe it will be there tomorrow.

If I knit the pattern number 41, I will try to make some changes to it on some parts. I think the neckline could be a little lower, the top could be some centimeters longer and the waist could be shaped. Earlier I have only changed the length, but the other changes are worth to try, too.

Sä kuvaat taas noita... (You only take photos of those...)

Geenalla oli selkeät mielipiteet mallitilkun kuvaamisesta: leikkiminen on kivempaa ja kuvaan pitää päästä mukaan. Ensin se iski silmänsä lankakerään ja alkoi leikkiä kissaa. Käytiin sitten välillä leikkimässä Geenan omalla lelulla, jonka jälkeen se päätti tulla mukaan mallitilkkukuvaan, ja hyvinhän se siihen sopikin, valitsi jopa itse sopivan paikan ja hyvän poseerausasennon. Siis mallitilkku oli tuossa ennen hauvaa. Ja kyllä, kuvaan välillä tekeleitäni sen saman sängyn päällä, jossa Geena ja minä nukumme.

Tuo on siis mehiläishuivin mallitilkku. Siitä tuli kerta yrittämällä sopivan kokoinen. Helmien kiinnittäminenkin sujui hyvin. Nyt vaan odotellaan 11:ttä päivää, jolloin ensimmäinen vihje tulee.

Geena had clear opinions about taking photos: playing is much more fun and she must be in the picture. First she had her eyes on skein and started to play cat. We played a while with her own toy, after which she decided to get in the picture. Well, I find that she is a good detail in it, she even choose a good place and way of posing by herself. The swatch was there before the dog. And yes, I sometimes take pictures of my handiwork on the same bed than both Geena and I sleep in.

So that is the swatch of the bee shawl. I got just the right size on my first attempt. Also attaching the beads went well. Now I’m waiting for the 11th of May, when the first clue will be given.

Tänään hankin langat kesätoppia varten. Minun piti jo viime keväänä tehdä kesäksi pusero tai toppi, mutta silloin en löytänyt sopivaa mallia. Aikaisemmin tänä vuonna tilaamassani ”Lace Style” –kirjassa ihastuin heti tuohon ”Lace-Eedged Corset” –toppiin. Lankojen kanssa kävi niin hyvin, että kotoisat Novitan Tennessee ja Virkkauslanka sopivat hyvin korvaamaan kirjan mallissa käytettyjä ulkomaisia lankoja. En varmaan olisi raaskinutkaan ostaa 100 %:sta silkkilankaa. Kunhan saan salaisuusprojektini valmiiksi, aloitan tuon topin.

Today I got yarn for a summer top. I meant to knit one last summer, but I never found a good pattern. Earlier this year I ordered Lace Style book and found the charming Lace-Edged Corset in it. Another good thing is that I can use familiar Tennessee and Virkkauslanka yarns of Novita instead of the foreign ones recommended in the book. After all, I don’t think I would have bought 100 % silk yarn. As soon as I finish my secret project, I will begin to knit this top.

Lankoja ja helmiä (Yarn and beads)

Tässäpä mehiläishuivia varten hankkimani tarvikkeet: 300 g Wetterhoffin Silviaa ja noin 3000 kappaletta 2,2 mm lasihelmiä. Lanka löytyi Korkeavuorenkadun Menitasta ja helmet Fredrikinkadulta Hobby Pointista Helsingistä.

Tuolla Hobby Pointissa kävin tänään. Katsoin eilen netistä karttaa väärin, kun siinä oli etelä oikealla ja länsi alhaalla. Päädyin siis harhailemaan pitkin Kampin katuja, kunnes ystävälliset vastaan tulijat opastivat oikeaan suuntaan. Pääasia joka tapauksessa, että liike ja helmet löytyivät.

These are the materials for my bee shawl: 300 g of Wetterhoff Silvia and about 3000 pieces of 2.2 mm beads. The yarn is from Menita on Korkeavuorenkatu and the beads from Hobby Point on Fredrikinkatu, both shops are in Helsinki.

On the Hobby Point I visited today. I checked the location yesterday incorrectly in the internet, because on the map south was on the right side and west was on the bottom of the map. Therefore I wondered around the streets until some kind people guided me to the right direction. Well, I found the shop and got the beads after all and that is the main thing.

Ulkoiluvappu (Labor Day outdoors)

Jopas oli Vappusää - kerrassaan mahtava! Niin kuin varmasti moni muukin, vietin suurimman osan päivästä ulkoillessa. Hypättiin Geenan kanssa heti yhdeksän jälkeen bussiin ja parin vaihdon jälkeen päädyimme Pirttimäen ulkoilumajalle. Sieltä kävelimme noin 10 km Luukin kautta Lahnukseen. Luukissa pidimme evästauon. Geena sai murutikun ja minä kylmäsavulohileivät. Sai Geenakin ihan pienen murusen lohesta. Jollain koiraporukalla oli jopa jälkitreenit Luukissa.

Tuo metsäulkoilu ei meille - tai minulle - riittänyt, vaan vielä piti lähteä kävelemään vanhemmilta siskon, hänen koirien ja Geenan kanssa siskolle viiden kilometrin matkaa. Geena kyllä kertoi puolessa välissä matkaa, että kävely saisi jo riittää, ja niin me hidastimmekin vauhtia. Geena sai ansaitun palauttavan hieronnan, kun pääsimme perille.

Luonto on kyllä niin kaunis tähän aikaan vuodesta! Polkujen varret ovat täynnä valko- ja sinivuokkoja, lehdet puhkeamaisillaan ja juuri puhjenneet ja maa vihertyy silmissä. Lintujen laulu, purojen solina ja auringonpaiste kruunasivat kaiken.

Geenan mielestä sekä meri- että järvivedet ovat jo riittävän lämpimiä uimista varten. Tosin kovin pitkään sekään ei vedessä viihtynyt. Äiti lupaili kokeilla tänä viikonloppuna, joko Mäntyharjulla tarkenee veteen mennä. Hyrrr, kyllä se mahtaa kuitenkin olla kylmää.

The weather of the Labor Day was just perfect! Like many other people, I believe, I spent most of the day outdoors. Geena and I took a bus right after 9 o’clock, changed the bus couple of times and found ourselves in the Pirttimäki hut. From there we hiked via Luukki hut to Lahnus, about 10 km. In Luukki we had our lunch. Geena got her own dog snack and I had a sandwich with smoked salmon. Geena got a tiny bit of the fish, too. In Luukki there was a group of people with dogs, and they were obviously training tracking.

The hike was not enough for us – or for me, that is. We walked also from my parent’s house to my sisters with her and her dogs (five more kilometers). On the half way Geena told us that she had had enough of walking for that day, so we slowed down. Geena got a well deserved relaxing massage, when we got to my sisters.

The nature is so beautiful this time of the year! The path sides are full of flowers (anemone nemorosa and hepatica nobilis), the trees are just getting or have just got leafs and the land gets greener every minute. The sounds of birds and streams and the sun shine crown it all.

Geena thinks that both the sea and lake waters are warm enough for swimming. However, she did not spend too long time in the water. My mother talked about maybe trying to swim at the summer cottage this weekend. Hrrr, I think that the water must still be too cold.

Myrtle Leaf -huivi (Myrtle Leaf shawl)

Tässäpä Myrtle Leaf -huivin alkua, lähes kolme mallikertaa on valmiina. Lankana on SNY:ni lähettämä merinosilkkilanka, jota on mukava neuloa. Puikot ovat puolestaan ihan tavalliset Prymit tai mitkä lie kokoa 2,5. Tahti on sen verran hidas, että tuon huivin valmistuminen tulee viemään pidemmän aikaa, mutta mitään pikaprojektia en odottanutkaan. Joskos saisin sen kesällä valmiiksi.

Slow Bee -mysteeri alkaa 11.5. ja huomenna on viimeinen päivä liittyä mukaan. Langaksi olen hankkinut vaaleanharmaata Wetterhoffin Silvia -lankaa, jossa on 30 % silkkiä ja 70 % villaa. Lanka löytyi Helsingin Menitasta.

Above is a picture of the beginning of the Myrtle Leaf shawl, I have knit the pattern almost three times. The yarn is merino wool and silk from my SP and it is nice to knit (after my fingers got used to thin yarn and needles). The needle size is 2.5 mm. The shawl is quite slow to knit, so it will take quite a long time to finish it. Well, that’s not a problem - I did not expect this project to be completed soon. Maybe I will get it finished in the summer.

The Slow-Bee-Mystery will start on May 11 and tomorrow is the last day to join the KAL. My yarn is light gray yarn, Silvia from Wetterhoff, and it contains 30 % silk and 70 % wool. I found it in the Menita shop in Helsinki.

Valmista ja suunnitteilla (Done and planned)

Wabi-sabi on valmis! Pingotin sen sunnuntai-iltana ja maanantaina jo kietaisin sen kaulaan töihin lähtiessäni. Huivista tuli tosi pitkä. Olisin pärjännyt huomattavasti lyhyemmälläkin huivilla, jolloin olisin saanut siitä vähän leveämmän. Muuten kyllä olen tosi tyytyväinen lopputulokseen, huivista tuli mielestäni kaunis.

My Wabi-sabi is done! I blocked it on Sunday evening and wrapped it around my neck on Monday morning, when I left to work. The scarf could have been shorter and wider. Otherwise I'm happy with it. I think it turned out very beautiful.

Postiakin on tullut oikein Ameriikasta asti. Posteljooni oli eilen tuonut ilmoituksen suurikokoisesta lähetyksestä, jota lähdin tänään (lankakaupan kautta) noutamaan. Paketista paljastuivat kaksi viikkoa sitten Amazonilta tilaamani Lace Style- ja Victorian Lace Today –kirjat. Ne eivät siis sittenkään tulleet sillä polkuveneellä. Wabi-sabi pääsi toimittamaan taustan tehtävää ja viime viikolla vaihdossa saamani ebenpuiset puikotkin pääsivät kuvaan mukaan.

I have received mail all the way from America. The postman brought me yesterday a message of a larger shipment, so I headed to the post office (via yarn shop) to get it. Inside the parcel there were the Lace Style and Victorian Lace Today books that I ordered from Amazon two weeks ago. The Wabi-sabi got to be the background. In the picture there are also my new wooden needles.

Tämä puolestaan on seuraava projektini: suorakulmainen Myrtle Leaf Shawl –huivi Victorian Lace Today –kirjasta. Lankana tulee olemaan ihanan SNY:ni lähettämä ihana merinosilkkilanka. En todellakaan aio neuloa huivia kolmosen sukkapuikoilla, ne vaan sopivat kuvaan niin hyvin. Kunhan olen tänään vähän siivonnut, vaihtanut multia ja kylvänyt kukan siemeniä, niin koetan ehtiä tekemään ensimmäistä mallitilkkua.

This is my next project: Myrtle Leaf Shalw from the book Victorian Lace Today. The yarn is wonderful merinosilk yarn from my wonderful SP. Indeed I will not knit the shawl with those double ended needles, they just looked good in the picture. After I have done some cleaning and sown some flower seeds, I’ll see if I’ll have time to try the first needle size.

Pää täynnä tietoa (Brain filled with information)

Kyllä nyt on pää ihan täynnä tietoa etsimisestä! Tämäkin kurssipäivä oli erittäin mielenkiintoinen, mutta vähän tuntui tulevan runsauden pula hurjan tietomäärän kanssa. Itse etsinnän lisäksi tänään käsiteltiin lyhyesti myös viestitoimintaa ja henkistä ensiapua.

Metsässä käytiin sateella kokeilemassa etsimistä käytännössä. Tuntui kummalliselta, miten vaikeaa aluksi oli kulkea tasaisessa rivissä muutaman metrin päässä toisistaan. Myöhemmin vielä vaikeutettiin ja kuljettiin kymmenen metrin päässä toisistamme, katsottiin kompassista kulkusuunta ja puhallettiin vuorotellen pilliin. Kuulostaa ehkä helpolta, mutta kyllä siihenkin harjoitusta tarvittiin. Sade antoi juuri sopivan tunnelmansa koulutukseen ja muistutti siitä, ettei Suomessa aina ole lämmin ja paista aurinko.

Wabi-sabi kostuu parhaillaan ämpärissä - pingotan sen yön ajaksi käytettyäni kohta ensin Hauvan ulkona. Yritän saada huomenna kuvia huivista.

My brain is filled with information of finding lost people! This last day of the course was also very interesting, but I feel I have received more information than I can handle. today we learned basics of communication and mental support.

We went to the forest when it was raining (not too difficult, since it has rained all day). You would not believe how difficult it is to walk in a straight line on a few meters distance from two other people. Later the task got more difficult: we walked in a row, 1o meters from each other, checked our way from the compass and blowed in our whistles in turns. That might sound easy, but the practice was very much needed. The rain gave a good tone to the training and reminded us of the fact that it’s not always warm and sunny in Finland.

The Wabi-sabi is in the water as I’m typing. I’ll deal with it shortly, I’ll just take my dog out first. I’ll try to take some pictures tomorrow.

Kurssilla (Training)

Olen viettänyt tämän päivän Kauniaisissa Vapaaehtoisen pelastuspalvelun eli VAPEPAn etsintäkurssilla. Kyseessä oli peruskurssin todella mielenkiintoinen teoriaosuus. Yllätyin, miten laajaa toiminta on, miten monen eri asian taitajaa siinä on mukana ja miten monta tekijää on etsintätilanteessa otettava huomioon. Huomenna on luvassa myös maastoharjoitusta. Luvassa on kylmää ilmaa ja vesisadetta, joten saadaan heti aimo annos toden tuntua.

Kurssille ja pelastustoimintaan olen päätynyt työkaverini kannustamana. Olen ollut muutaman kerran talven aikana hänen mukanaan hakukoiratreeneissä. Kovasti toivon, että joskus voisin kouluttaa myös oman koiran toimintaan.

Mutta kirjoitetaanpa nyt vähän noista käsitöistäkin. Wabi-sabi ei todellakaan ole vielä valmistunut. Se on tosin enää hapsujen viimeistelyä ja pingottamista vaille valmis, joten vähästä se on enää kiinni.

Toiseksi olen alkanut neuloa yhtä lahjaa ja saanut sen jo puoliväliin valmiiksi. Uutta toteutustapaa tuohon lahjaan kokeilen.

Kävin eilen työn jälkeen palauttamassa rikkoutuneen pyöröpuikon. En voi kuin kehua liikkeestä saamaani palvelua. Myyjä oli samaa mieltä kuin minäkin, ettei puikolle noin pitäisi käydä, ja korvasi vahingon uudella tuotteella. Sain tilalle numeron 3 ebenpuiset sukkapuikot. Ebenpuisia puikkoja minulla ei vielä ollutkaan enkä ole sellaisia koskaan kokeillut, joten olen vaihtoon erittäin tyytyväinen. Tällä hetkellä ei ole suunnitteilla mitään neuletta, joihin noita puikkoja tarvitsisin, mutta kokeilen niitä kyllä heti kun mahdollista.

Ja vielä viimeisenä asiana, liityin mukaan Slow-Bee mysteeriin. Ensimmäistä kertaa olen mukana KAL -projektissa. Langaksi olen suunnitellut Wetterhoffin Veeraa, mutta sen hankinta ja saatavuus on vielä epävarmaa. Valmistajalta lankaa saisi toki netin kautta tilattua, mutta värikarttaa ei netistä löydy, enkä tahtoisi tuurillakaan tilata. Koetan ehtiä maanantaina poiketa Menita Outlet:ssa katsomassa, josko heiltä löytyisi apua. Onkohan mukana jo muitakin suomalaisia?

I have spent the day in Kauniainen on a theory part of a course of finding lost people (http://www.vapepa.fi/). I was surprised how many people are involved in this, how many special skills are needed and how many things have to be considered during a rescue operation. Tomorrow we will go out for the practical part of training. The weather forecast predicts cold and rainy weather, so we will face reality on that part at once.

My friend introduced this activity to me last autumn. Since then I have participated with the rescue dog training few times. I hope very much that one day I could train my own dog for this purpose.

And now something about knitting. I did not finish the Wabi-sabi yet, but iIt lacks very little.

I have also started to knit a gift and I’m on the half way with it. I’m trying some new techniques for the present.

Yesterday after word I took the broken needle back. I can only compliment the service in the shop. The sales person agreed with me with the fact that a needle should not break like that and gave me a new product as a replacement. I got 3 mm wooden double end needles. (What is that black wood called in English?) I did not have any needles of that wood before, so I’m very happy. At the moment I have not planned a knitting project in which I could test those needles, but I will do it as soon as possible.

Last but not least, I have joined the Slow-Bee-mystery, which is my first KAL ever. I have planned to use Wetterhof Veera, but I’m not sure where to get it. I could order it in the internet, but there are no color charts in the internet and I would not want to try my luck. I’ll try to stop at Menita Outlet yarn shop on Monday to see if they could help me. I wonder if other Finns have joined this KAL?

Puikko poikki (Broken needle)

Voihan vietävä! Puikko meni rikki kolmen viikon käytön jälkeen. Se taipuisa kaapeli, siima, pyöröosa vai mikä se nyt onkaan nimeltään, irtosi tupesta kesken neulomisen. Onneksi mitään silmukkakatastrofia ei tapahtunut, vaan sain pudonneet yksilöt poimittua kauniisti takaisin ja vaihdettua rikkoutuneen puikon tilalle toisen. Myyjän kanssa asia on jo sovittu, joten siltäkin osin asia on jo kunnossa. Menen käymään liikkeessä loppuviikosta hakemassa tilalle uudet puikot.

Wabi-sabi on hyvällä mallilla ja alan netin suljettuani päätellä silmukoita. Saisinkohan vielä tänään pingotettua sen…

Dear oh dear! A needle got broken just after three weeks use. The cable got of the thing that holds it attached to the needle, when I was knitting last night. Fortunately it did not cause any catastrophe with the stitches and I could pick them up just fine on another needle. We got to agreement with the seller, and I can pick new needles from the store.

The Wabi-sabi is almost done, I’ll start the bind-offs when I close the computer. Wonder if I’ll get it all done this evening.

Kuinka hitaasti kirjat voivat tulla? (How long time can it take?

Niin kuin kerroin, tilasin muutama päivä sitten Amazonilta kaksi kirjaa, Lace Stylen ja Victorian Lace Todayn. Sain sähköpostiin tiedon, että kirjat on lähetetty Jenkeistä 31.3. ja arvioitu toimitus on vasta 28.4.! Kuulostaa siltä kuin Kusti olisi pistetty tällä kertaa polkemaan polkuvenettä. Toivottavasti ei tule pahaa myrskyä. Jotenkin odottaisin niitä kirjoja kuun puolessa välissä, muistaakseni parissa viikossa tuli paketti Interweaveltakin - ja se oli joulukuussa.

As I wrote before, I ordered Lace Style and Victorian Lace Today books from Amazon a few days ago. In my e-mail I got a confirmation that the books have been shipped on 31 March and that the estimated delivery is on 28 April! That sounds like they would travel around the world before landing in Finland. My own estimation is a lot more optimistic. I would expect them in the middle of April. If I remember right, my order from Interweave arrived in two weeks - and that was in December.
